The term 'awaara' means rowdy in Hindi. However the (cult) film by the very name (released in 1951), made by the unique Showman Raj Kapoor, has now made it to 1 of 100 greatest films within the prestigious Time magazine. The magazine has included this film among 20 new entries added to its list of 'All Time 100 Greatest Films made since 1923'. The magazine also referred to as the film as 'a glistening showcase for Kapoor and the nice India siren Nargis.' In addition they added that 'The 50s films he headlined and directed became huge hits not only in his newly freed homeland but in addition around the Arab crescent from Indonesia to North Africa'.

Time critic Richard Corliss described the legendary Raj Kapoor as 'the great star-auteur of India's postcolonial golden age of films - Cary Grant and Cecil B. DeMille in a single handsome package.'

Readers may recall that the 'All-Time 100' list published in 2005 saw the likes of Satyajit Ray's The Apu Trilogy, Mani Ratnam's Nayakan and Guru Dutt's Pyaasa listed in it.
