Filmmakers line up biopics – with Bollywood twist

The commercial success of “The Dirty Picture” gave new life to biopics. Bollywood has now lined up a slew of real people’s real stories, though filmmakers admit these are churned out with a splash of entertaining fiction.

“Paan Singh Tomar” closely followed “The Dirty Picture” and turned out to be a sleeper hit. Some upcoming biopics include “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag”, “Rang Rasiya”, “Shoot Out At Wadala”, “Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2″ and “Barfi”.

But filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt told IANS: “Any biopic can't be a pure biopic because one tends so as to add the entertainment quotient to the film to create space for commercial zone.It is less complicated to mention that you're creating a biopic than to really make a biopic.

“Many of them claim it to be a biopic and use it for the publicity. There's a lot of pain that goes into the research of the nature and to do justice to the main points of a person’s journey. Simply by claiming so, it doesn’t become a biopic. You utilize a selected person, icon as a peg to launch your product,” he said.

Usually Hollywood starts a trend and Bollywood follows. Hindi films, however, resisted biopics for a very long time. However the success of “The Dirty Picture”, in regards to the lifetime of southern sex icon Silk Smitha, appeared to alter the mindset.

Milan Luthria, director of “The Dirty Picture”, starring Vidya Balan, feels there aren't any pure biopics.

“When my film did well, it gave more courage to others that biopics have the ability to hit the economic zone. Such a lot of real life stories are there, but they don't seem to be pure biopics as entertainment is added to facts. Whilst you opt for a pure biopic, then it could get just a little boring,” Luthria told IANS.

Making biopics is challenging because the stories are separated from history to suit into specific requirements of showbiz.

However, director Ketan Mehta feels again and again fact is more astonishing than fiction. “In many cases fact is stranger than the fiction. Real life is more astonishing than a fictional story. One of the vital biopics or their story could be very fascinating,” he told IANS.

Mehta has wielded the megaphone for biopics like “Sardar”, at the country’s first home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel; “Mangal Pandey: The Rising”, which told the tale of 1 of the important thing leaders of 1857 Sepoy Mutiny; and his much delayed “Rang Rasiya”, in keeping with the lifetime of 19th century painter Raja Ravi Varma.

Translating the actual life story on celluloid requires numerous research.

“I take in subjects that inspire me. MUCH MORE research goes into creating a period film where you don’t have enough records or much evidence,” Mehta told IANS.

“Unfortunately, India has not started the fad of biopics yet. If it happens within the near future, then it's wonderful,” he added.

Luthria feels “in Hollywood, that is an old trend and so they was engaged on it for an extended time”.

Sometimes filmmakers are dragged into legal trouble too.

“It is determined by what the family feels about it? What are the terms and stipulations agreed upon between them? There are lots of such things to be cleared,” Ram Gopal Varma told IANS. He had made “Rakta Charitra”, a bilingual film on slain Andhra Pradesh politician Paritala Ravindra.

“Many a time a director initially claims it to be a biopic and later says it's been inspired by a specific person. It happens for the reason that formalities don't seem to be completed. You get excited when the maker or the director says it's in line with someone. But if suddenly problems crop up, they may change the story,” Verma added.

Bhatt said, “When you might be exploring the human side to inform an untold story, one might get into trouble. Every now and then the person’s members of the family is probably not pleased with how you are portraying a character.”

He described his production venture “Woh Lamhe” as a last goodbye to the memories of actress Parveen Babi, whom he loved and lost.

The biopic virus is spreading so fast that when Vidya Balan and Irrfan Khan, even Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is probably going to play hockey legend Dhyan Chand. – IANS

Up to now now we have successfully remade our Hindi productions within the South, like Khosla Ka Ghosla (in Tamil) and A Wednesday (in Tamil and Telegu). Some content transcends culture and language, and draws audiences in for the sheer quality of storytelling. Within the same vein, we believe Delhi Belly will work superbly well with Tamil audiences and we're thrilled with the exceptionally adapted screenplay that a team of young writers has developed. We have now brought about actors who're youthful and popular, along side an overly skilled director on the helm, and we're confident that the good content of Delhi Belly will act as a bridge for cinema loving audiences across languages", said Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO, UTV Movies.

The sources disclose that Kareena, so far, has just been inked for the emblem. It will likely be disclosed soon if she is going to be giving hard competition to Kajol by being part of the similar product, or whether Kajol will not more be connected with the brand.

Whatever happens, all we adore for is that the sweet bond between Kareena-Kajol since ‘We Are Family’, doesn’t break on account of this.

Tere Bin Laden sequel to take off

It appears to be the age of sequels and remakes currently. With a variety of filmmakers opting to either remake or make sequels, we hear that the 2010 satirical comedy film Tere Bin Laden will even have a sequel. However, the sequel might be titled Tere Bin Laden 3.

The film on the way to be produced by Pooja Shetty and directed by Abhishek Sharma will kick-start on May 2, to coincide with the primary death anniversary of the scary terrorist. Apparently, the film takes to the air after Osama's death. While at the acting front, both Pradhuman Singh and Ali Zafar may be part of the sequel.

Randeep to attend as Emraan continues drive for Jannat 2

Even though the makers of Jannat 2 have categorically stated that this can be a solo hero film with Emraan Hashmi leading from the front, looks as if those with reference to Randeep Hooda haven't taken the statement too kindly. After all, Randeep - who's fresh out of playing a key protagonist in his last release Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster - would have definitely bargained for a greater placement in Jannat 2. However statements that convey that 'it was a conscious decision to not do something about Randeep for Jannat 2 promotion' are heartbreaking to mention the least.

"Sometimes what's printed doesn't quite convey the precise expression with that you had made a specific statement", says a source with regards to Kunal, "He had always maintained that Jannat 2 isn't a two hero film. Actually Randeep too was aware of this from the very beginning. For this reason why Kunal had also admitted that Randeep was not within the know-how of the promotional strategy because on the end of the day it's Emraan's film. This does not imply though that other actors do not need a job to play. Randeep knows his place within the film; he hasn't been cheated here and there's no reason behind him to feel let down."

Still, since there may be lot of misinterpretation in play here and the obvious miscommunication hasn't gone down well with all involved, there's an instant damage control in play. Step one on this direction is for Kunal to hail Randeep's presence within the film.

"Randeep is a brilliant actor. Period. When he becomes part of a film, he obviously adds weight to the proceedings. The most efficient part about Randeep is that he was consistent in all his films," remarks Kunal. Obviously the tone sounds a lot more euphoric and awe inspiring this time around.

Continuing his appreciation for Randeep and additional re-establishing his importance to Jannat 2, Kunal says, "IT'S ONLY that he have been doing a large number of offbeat films because of which he wasn't seen as much by the audience prior to now as he deserves. Now Jannat 2 would give him a platform where he can showcase his talent to lot of individuals. The selection of individuals who would see the film could be five times or more of Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster. However that may be 'yet' to happen. Once that happens, he would naturally command his place for being a lot more prominently placed within the promotional campaign of his future films."

We get the purpose Kunal.

Ferrari Ki Sawaaris special screening for giant B

Munnabhai director Raj Kumar Hirani has moved on. He's going to now direct a movie called P K with Aamir Khan within the lead for Vinod Chopra Productions. The following Munnabhai film entitled Munnabhai Ki Aatma Katha will reunite Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi and Boman Irani. But would probably be directed by the Ferrari Ki Sawaari director Rajesh Mapuskar.

It's now felt within Vinod Chopra's production house that Hirani's Munnabhai legacy may also be handed over to a different director without mishap.

Recently, Vidhu Vinod Chopra invited the massive B to view his new film Ferrari Ki Sawaari. Apparently, the large B loved the film and told the delighted producer so.

Says Chopra proudly, "Mr. Bachchan saw the rough cut and loved it. It took us four years to write down Ferrari Ki Sawaari. After we could've worked with any of the massive stars after 3 Idiots, we chose to work with Sharman Joshi. We're very pleased with Ferrari Ki Sawaari. It is going to be probably the most biggest within the history of Indian cinema. You'll put that on record. But that isn't why we made it."

Anil Kapoor reduced to tears by Arjun Kapoor

Debutant Arjun Kapoor lost his mother before his film Ishaqzaade might be released. But he seems to have found incredible goodwill among family and friends.

Arjun is suddenly the blue-eyed boy. And we're not the least surprised to listen to his uncle Anil Kapoor raving concerning the boy like he hasn't ever raved about any newcomer.

After seeing some rushes of the film, Anil called this writer to share his joy. Anil saw glimpses of himself in Arjun.

Says the proud teary-eyed uncle, "I USED TO BE so moved by mera bachcha. Arjun jogged my memory such a lot of my younger days. Wohi junoon, wohi josh. But he's way more confident and subtle in his first film than I USED TO BE in my first ten films. Come to consider it he jogs my memory of my character in Tezaab. So reckless, so young, so fearless and such a lot fun. In reality both Arjun and his co-star Parineeti Chopra took me unexpectedly".

Anil makes it clear that he is not raving about Arjun for the reason that boy is his nephew. "Nahin, uss ladke mein kuch hai. He just won my heart over. I remember him running around with my daughters and son...just as a child. Today he has grown up into one of these responsible boy and a very good actor. And do you know, he got a Yashraj Film on his own with none recommendation from me or his father. We're very pleased with him."

So is the protecting paternal film fraternity. Creating a surprising concession, Yashraj is seemingly allowing Arjun's near and expensive ones to have a dekko at Ishaqzaade.

Yashraj never allows anyone from the surface to look at their films until release.

One isn't at liberty to show an excessive amount of at the present time. But an overly special tribute is being planned for Arjun's mother Mona Kapoor when the film is released.

When Nargis had gave up the ghost weeks before her son Sanjay Dutt's debut film Rocky released, a seat were kept vacant next to Sanjay in her memory.

The official announcement of the similar is being awaited.

Rakhi Sawant in Bengali remake of The Dirty Picture

If you're a kind of who went 'ooh-laa-laa' with the curves and gyrations of Vidya Balan in The Dirty Picture, then, be ready for some really hotter-than-hot action, courtesy none instead of Rakhi Sawant! The scoop is that Rakhi has now been signed as much as play Vidya Balan's role within the Bengali remake of The Dirty Picture. The film is being directed by Shatabdi Roy and is being produced by Tapas Paul.

Talking about this film, Rakhi said that Vidya Balan has done nothing in The Dirty Picture and that she is going to do better and warmer scenes within the Bengali remake, such a lot in order that even Vidya Balan could be surprised after seeing her character! While on Rakhi, Tapas said they had met her recently and had liked her within the item song within the Bengali film Om Shanti. He also added that the quest for the male lead continues to be on.

The finishing shot (as always) belonged to Rakhi, who said that the sari is supposed to be taken off in films, not worn and that the flicks become successful for this reason and never on account of stars.

We wonder what Vidya Balan has to mention to this!

In retrospect 100 years of Zohra Sehgal

It is Zohra Sehgal's inspiring journey as a theatre, film and television artiste, that makes her birth centenary so special

There aren't many that have the privilege of Amitabh Bachchan pulling a chair for them. Zohra Sehgal is a type of few," filmmaker R Balki says with fun. "WHENEVER Zohraji came at the sets of 'Cheeni Kum', Mr Bachchan would stand up, first greet her after which pull a chair for her to sit," says the adman-turned-director and adds that Sehgal's mesmerising inner beauty makes her his most favourite woman.

This grand old lady - famous for her vivaciousness and exuberance - will turn 100 on April 27. Sehgal currently resides in Delhi along with her daughter, Kiran Sehgal, and, as her friends say, the sprightly actor's zest for all times remains to be intact.

Though the prevailing generation understands Sehgal, mainly through her sporadic movie appearances, the older generation will vouch for her powerful performances on stage. She started her career in 1935 as a number one dancer with the Uday Shankar Ballet Company and travelled across the world. In 1945, she joined Prithviraj Kapoor's Prithvi Theatre group as an actor on a monthly salary of Rs 400.

"Prithviraj used to then run his company on the Opera House. She worked with him for just about 14 years. She is indeed among the finest stage actresses we have," says theatre veteran MS Sathyu. Her sister Uzra Butt too was a well-liked actor.

During this period, she married a fellow dancer, Kameshwar Sehgal. After having acted in numerous plays, she made her film debut in Indian People's Theatre Association’s (IPTA) first film, Dharti Ke Lal (1946), which was directed by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas. She followed it up with another IPTA film, Neecha Nagar.

After Kapoor shut down Prithvi for a while, and Sehgal lost her husband, she moved to Delhi. Sathyu recalls that it was then that she taught dance to a Hindustani theatre group within the '60s. "I got to understand her during that period and realised her passion for theatre and dance," says Sathyu. Her passion for the art won her a drama scholarship in Great Britain in 1962. Her memoir titled Stages: The Art & Adventures of Zohra Sehgal talks about how after her scholarship ended, she was broke and jobless, and made a living as a dresser in London's green rooms for just about 10 years or even educated her children there.

Sehgal bounced back within the late '70s when she was rediscovered by the makers of British TV shows and movies. Following serials equivalent to Jewel within the Crown, My Beautiful Launderette and Tandoori Nights, her sense of humour and candour became highly regarded. Movies akin to Bhaji at the Beach and Merchant Ivory Productions' The Courtesans of Bombay enhanced her popularity within the West.

In the '90s, she returned to India. She was in her 80s and plenty of thought that she would quit acting. Sehgal proved everyone wrong. She acted in TV shows in addition to films. In Amma and Family on Home TV, she played the central character. Sadia Dehlvi, who wrote and produced the show, says, "I WILL BE ABLE TO never forget Zohra aapa for her energy and professionalism. She always arrived at the sets on time, knew her lines by heart and regaled us with stories from her eventful life." Her co-actor Himani Dehlvi echoes that there has been never a lifeless day at the sets, way to Sehgal. The centenarian also did several big banner movies in Bollywood - Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Dil Se, Tera Jaadu Chal Gaya and Saawariya.

The secret of her long career lies in her energy. "We were shooting at Qutub Minar with Mr Bachchan, and Zohraji was 94 then. The temperature was 43 degree celsius, yet she stood there through takes and gave a very good performance," he recalls. Tales of her passion for acting make us hope that the centenarian will continue to enthrall the audience within the years to come.

Pyarelal remembers late partner Laxmikant

At 71, Pyarelal Sharma has the keenness of a musical newbie. He remembers his late partner with none false melodrama. "We were like one, closer than brothers, so no person may even start to understand our bond,'' he says. Not many are aware that till Laxmikant suggested that they team up as a duo in films, Pyarelal's ambition was to become a famous musician from India in Western music abroad, like his close friend Zubin Mehta.

After Laxmikant passed on to the great beyond in 1998, the maestro (described by Laxmikant because the" only complete music director in Hindi cinema'' who could read and write Indian and Western notations, compose, arrange, conduct and record songs and knew all instruments just like the back of his hand) fought back against bad times. "Even today, I WOULDN'T mind doing films in the event that they are from A-list setups. Yash Chopra, Subhash Ghai and Mahesh Bhatt keep talking about working together again, and i'm waiting!'' he says with a twinkle in his eye. In those hard times, Pyarelal recorded over 40 songs for albums that never came out.

The composer, who's considered India's finest violinist, made his first unique experiment when he recorded three songs (with only basic rhythm and percussion) with popular playback singers singing the chorus and instrumental sections, while the chorus sang the solo portions! His eyes lit up with the pure joy of an innovative creator, he adds, ''For Ek pyar ka naghma hai from Shor I'VE extensively utilized choir voices because the strings section. I NEED to make an album of eight such numbers. Lata (Mangeshkar)bai and Amitji (Amitabh Bachchan have heard these songs and so they asked me how I'LL conceive what hasn't ever been done before anywhere, but I'M always contemplating methods to get a hold of something new!''

In 2003, a British violinist named Candida visited Pyarelal and persuaded him to go to England's Trinity College of Music. ''From 2004 to 2007, my wife and that i would live there for four weeks every year, and that i would teach the professors there,'' recalls Pyarelal. ''It gave me a super sense of pride when David Welton, managing director of the London Philharmonic, told me, 'Your music is like pure gold!'''

Pyarelal taught the British musicians to play his music. ''The London Philharmonic Orchestra got used to playing Western classical with an Indian folk touch and pan-Asian influences. I introduced new drums and wrote to a 2-4 beat after they are used to play at the 5-4. I also taught them to forestall moving back and forth while playing!'' smiles the composer, who adds that once musicians there came to understand that he had composed songs and background music for 500 films, one in all them exclaimed, ''Then you need to be no less than 300 years old!''

''I was invited also to compose a quartet for four teenage musicians who were fascinated with Indian music, and that i admit that I made their score slightly difficult, but they rose to the challenge,'' he says proudly.

Pyarelal simultaneously composed two symphonies (essentially the most difficult of all Western music creations) and his work was published there within the book called Indian Summer by Schotts, a London-based publishing company. The symphony, called Om Shivam In A-Minor, was later registered in 2009 (after it went during the due but lengthy protocol of vetting the composition) at The big apple and the registration certificate is among his proud possessions. ''One more symphony is set and i'm composing two more,'' says the legendary composer, who has even incorporated elements of dadra and keherwa in Om Shivam... and has two simultaneous beats playing in it!

The legendary composer may be into more musical explorations. Except the Laxmikant-Pyarelal concerts that he keeps doing and the song Dhoom tana that he arranged for Shah Rukh Khan's Om Shanti Om, he's going to hold - later this year - an international Music concert in Germany, another World Music show with vocals-something never done before-in Austria and in addition present his symphony in a concert in America.

In France some years back, Pyarelal had composed and organized an album of Indian film hits for leading artiste Pascal, called Pascal In Bollywood. ''The songs were neither restricted to Laxmikant-Pyarelal songs nor Hindi films alone,'' he said. More recently, Shaad Ali recorded a 10-minute song penned by Gulzar and sung by Sonu Niigaam and Shreya Ghoshal for a Paris Festival. The song was staged live by Ranveer Band Baaja Baaraat Singh and a French actress in a performance directed by Ali there.

On March 15, 2012 in Dubai, Pyarelal again conceived a singular experiment in front of a 5000-strong live audience including world musicians-''They were dancing to the music!'' smiles Pyarelal. A BUNCH of 20 Indian and 20 Western musicians joined forces for a global Music performance called Absolute India composed and organized by Pyarelal and conducted by Kristjan Jarvi, Permanent Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. It was set in a 12-tone scale of original music that may eventually form the language of a brand new harmonious amalgam of Indian and Western music. ''I considered the speculation of Indian in addition to Western musicians playing together on what's composed, written and conducted. I also devised solo pieces for Dr L.Subramaniam and his son Amby. And alongside, Kavita Krishnamurthi-Subramaniam, Amit Kumar, Sonu Niigaam and others sang our hit songs as well.''

For Pyarelal, the sky is clearly not the limit. ''From my father Pandit Ramprasad Sharma and my guru Anthony Gonsalves to the master composers we assisted, I'VE absorbed such a lot of music. However the more I learn, the more I realise that there's no end to musical knowledge,'' says the composer.

Innovative Manmohan Desai introduced vanity vans – Amitabh Bachchan

Vanity vans aren't any more exclusive in Bollywood, says Amitabh Bachchan, revealing that they was first introduced by Mahmohan Desai. The megastar added that the late filmmaker gifted him one too.

“At the studios these days, the biggest space is taken up by the shallowness vans for artists, talent, directors, writers .. It was never like this in our time… ok .. like earlier days! There have been make up rooms in the event you were important enough, sharing an office space with two others in case you had just started off, and did your changing and make up within the production bus that transported the workers and crew .. Now and then for an all night shoot, you simply dozed off at the floor of the set… getting a room was a luxury,” wrote Big B on his blog.

“But Manmohan Desai, the master, was different. He had a back problem and had to lie down as he travelled to the sets, so he built himself a van where a bed may well be placed and post a television set inside, something that was unheard of, and wait put a mirror in the back of the sleeping area, to look at the television lying the other way round !! Why so ? Because he said the imagery is healthier when it reflects off a mirror !!! Its laterally inverted but so what he would say ! After which within a couple of days presented me with one,”

Amitabh says that during those days the vans used to have few basic facilities.

“It was not what vanity vans are like today. It had a bed, a bathroom, and seating with a fold out table on one among them. I installed a pull out make up tray with mirror, to do my make up in there and desperately tried to mend a music system within. It took several pioneering efforts so to achieve that, but finally all of it came around, and since I had a general license for it, I moved across the city in it.

“Gave me privacy. Gave me a bed to rest on for the hour long drives and a ready wash room ! Ecstasy and enjoyment!! Ok so lying at the bed during movement was somewhat arduous at every bump or turn, you slid off to the ground. Nothing I MAY do about it. However the great innovator Mr Man Mohan Desai did have an answer. Seat belts that strapped him up as he lay !! Now and then it seemed like contraptions used to pin down a violent patient in hospitals,” wrote Amitabh.

Desai had teamed up with Big B in hits like “Mard”, “Coolie”, “Naseeb”, “Suhaag”, “Parvarish” and “Amar Akbar Anthony” – IANS

Action, comedy, drama – a summer bonanza for movie-goers

Movie aficianados are in for a summer delight! From Hollywood treats like “The Avengers” and “Madagascar 3″ to Bollywood potboilers like “Jannat 2″ and “Rowdy Rathore”, a heady mixture of romance, drama, action and comedy await movie-goers this holiday season.

“We have gotten two of probably the most eagerly awaited releases lined up. We're bringing Oscar winning film ‘Hugo 3D’ on popular demand to India in May and ‘Madagascar 3′ in June. We're expecting great response for our releases within the holiday season,” Vikram Malhotra, COO of Viacom18 Motion Pictures, told IANS.

While “Hugo 3D” releases May 4, “Madagascar 3″ (3D) will hit the screens June 8.

Set in 1930s Paris, the Oscar winning film “Hugo” tells the story of an orphan who lives inside the walls of a train station and is wrapped in a mystery involving his late father and an automaton, while “Madagacar 3″ narrates the tale of Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Gloria the hippo, and Melman the giraffe, who fight to get home to their beloved New York.

“‘Madagascar 3′ is without doubt one of the most loved franchises. The former two films of this franchise have received tremendous response from people across every age and we're expecting the third one to be equally successful,” Malhotra said.

“‘Hugo 3D’ may have limited but loyal audience. There's a lot of curiosity among people for this film,” he added.

“The Avengers” is another big Hollywood release this summer. Distributed by UTV Motion Pictures, the film goes to hit 800 Indian screens, a record choice of screens for any Hollywood film in India thus far. Additionally it is dubbed in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

The film starring Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Chris Hemsworth, have been directed by Joss Whedon.

“‘The Avengers’ is a superhero film and we're expecting a very good response after its release, more in order it's releasing first in India than within the US,” said Gaurav Verma, vice president, distribution, India, UTV Motion Pictures.

“We expect an even viewership because the film is releasing in four different languages, which in turn expands the reach too. Other Hollywood films lined up for release this summer are ‘Spider Man’ and ‘Batman’,” he added.

Apart from “Hugo” and “Madagascar 3″, other Hollywood treats are “Cindrella 3D”, “Men in Black 3″, “Brave (3D)” and “Chimpanzee (documentary)”.

Bollywood isn't far behind. The month of May will see films like “Jannat 2″, “The Forest”, “Dangerous Ishhq”, “Ishaqzaade” and “Department” hitting the screens, June will see films like “Rowdy Rathore”, “Shanghai”, “Ferrari Ki Sawaari”, “Gangs of Wasseypur” and “Teri Meri Kahaani” entertaining the audience.

“The line up of Bollywood films this summer are very interesting. There are films like ‘Rowdy Rathore’, ‘Ishaqzaade’ and ‘Department’ hitting the screens. Our big Bollywood release this summer is ‘Rowdy Rathore’ with Akshay Kumar and we've got huge expectations from it too,” said Verma.

While a majority of Hollywood films releasing this holiday season target children, Bollywood barely has anything to provide them.

“In Hindi film industry, there is not any specific genre of kids films as it is typical masala films that work here. Children films listed here are of lowest common denomination,” said Malhotra.

However, Verma says Bollywood films have universal appeal and don’t cater to a selected segment.

“Hindi films have universal appeal and they're barely targeted towards a particular segment of audience. So this is a myth that films for youngsters aren't being made in India,” he added. – IANS

Big B pleased with Sachin’s nomination, Sanjay Dutt differs

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan Saturday expressed happiness on the recent nomination of actress Rekha and cricket legend Sachin Tendulakar to the Rajya Sabha, while Sanjay Dutt was unhappy with Sachin becoming a parliamentarian.

Meanwhile, Dutt, who terms himself to be a large fan of Tendulkar, is sad with him being a member of the Rajya Sabha.

“It is an honour to be within the Rajya sabha. I'M partial to Sachin. He's the pride and jewel of India. But, I'M REALLY NOT happy that he's a Rajya Sabha member. He must have been the way in which he is,” he said. – IANS

Tezz – Movie Review

Tezz Movie Poster 200x213Film: “Tezz”Starring: Anil Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, Zayed Khan, Sameera Reddy, Kangna Ranaut, Boman IraniDirector: PriyadarshanRating: 3star

What do you do when a country, a culture and their purveyors wrong you irreparably? You plant a bomb in a speeding train and hold the establishment to ransom.

Taking a cue from Hollywood’s most watched bomb-maro-bomb rush-hour excursions into plunder-land “Tezz” springs forward a nicely-packaged expertly-cut he-dunnit. And that’s an overly different genre from the whodunit.

Here we all know Ajay Devgn is the closet terrorist. But since his fans won’t like it, Devgn is, with due respect to Mira Nair, a reluctant terrorist… how reluctant, we won’t reveal fully.

Devgn has a back story with screen wife Kangna Ranaut, who in line with her character’s British domicile, sports blonde hair. No, this isn't a joke.

Luckily, Priyadarshan’s plot has much more going for itself than its leading lady’s hair-to-stay problems. The director creates a taut cat-and-mouse game between ‘terrorist’ Devgn and cop Anil Kapoor who in true Hollywood style, is at the verge of retirement from service when duty beckons.

There are enough men on duty on either side of the law here to refill one part of Tihar jail. The narration allows elbow-room for a military of actors laden with anxious motivations and tense expressions to match, all hurling just like the speeding train towards an uncertain nemesis. Luckily, the plot finds itself a powerful finale. And we will go home feeling all isn't lost for the slick action genre in Bollywood.

There is hope.

There are some jaw-dropping action sequences here. A few of them, like Devgn and Kapoor’s fist-to-fist within the grand finale and the quest for Devgn in a hospital’s car park, are so expertly executed they make you forget how far Bollywood lags behind within the action genre from its firangi counterpart. But alternatively one of the vital stunts just like the one where passengers from the bomb-threatened train climb right into a safe train, are done clumsily enough to bring us down with a thud.

Curiously, Zayed Khan and Sameera Reddy who play Devgn’s accomplices within the terror crime are given one extended heart-in-the-mouth chase sequence each. They show remarkable agility of their given space. Ditto the film’s technicians. Thiru S. Appan’s camera looks at London with keen anticipation.

Aditya Dhar doesn’t get a hold of one memorable dialogue except, “Teri Maa Ki…” when Devgn while negotiating his ransom money with train executive Boman Irani drops his cellphone.

“He’s Indian, not Pakistani,” Boman confidently informs cop Anil Kapoor with a straight face.

The absurdities don’t swamp ‘Tezz’. True its title, the story of a bomb and a Boman looking to diffuse the crisis, whizzes by at breakneck speed.

Priyadarshan’s tackles what’s a brand new genre for him, with pleasure and aplomb. Ajay Devgn, Anil Kapoor, Boman Irani, Sameera Reddy and Zayed Khan furnish a flavour of slickness to a narrative that holds your attention till the end.

Not quite edge-of-the-seat, the thrills in Tezz are engaging enough to maintain us watching. – IANS

Paoli Dam in Vikram Bhatts Love Games

After the film a few woman who becomes a hooker to get despite the person who wronged her, here's a much bigger shocker. Producer-director Vikram Bhatt is prepared to make a movie at the taboo subject of wife-swapping with the bold-and-the-uninhibited Paoli Dam within the lead.

Vikram who was researching at the subject has some startling statistics on spouse-swapping.

Says Bhatt, "Why do you assert wife-swapping is taboo? You would be surprised to understand what number of urban couples delight in it. It's prevalent, almost rampant within the big cities. Go on the web. There are websites dedicated to wife-swapping. That is what we've come to. I NEED to explore the psychology of wife-swapping. How does a person tell his wife to move and sleep together with his friend and the way does the wife give consent to her husband's sexual tryst with another woman? More importantly, how do the husband and wife take a look at one another within the eye the morning after? These are questions that haunt me."

Refraining from commenting on Abbas-Mustan's film Ajnabee on wife-swapping, Vikram says he enjoyed Rajat Kapoor's Mixed Doubles. "That was a gentle tackle wife-swapping. Mine can be way more dark and probing."

Vikram says he has chosen Paoli within the wife-swapping tale on account of her loss of self-consciousness before the camera. "Paoli has the courage to head beyond her body on camera. That's where I NEED to compliment my film Love Games."

When asked about her sexually-charged roles and the way it might impact her image and career in Bollywood, Paoli Dam shrugged, "Love Games is another bold film, I agree. Vikram and that i are engaged on my character. Rest assured I won't be doing what I'm expected to. My character won't resemble what I played in Hate Story."

Refuting reports that her family and her boyfriend in Kolkata are exceedingly upset together with her bare-dare act, Paoli says, "TO BEGIN WITH I'M single. So far as my parents are concerned, they do not react. Apparently, all of the Dam family is rather cool with the daughter of the family carving a curvaceously unorthodox career route for herself.

As for wife-swapping, Vikram says it goes back to our mythology. That does not mean he's creating a mythological film on sharing greater than only a hello together with your friend's wife.

Priyadarshan versus Tezz producer

Priyadarshan who had all but lost his battle to get the Mallika Sherawat number out of his new film Tezz, won a partial victory on the last minute.

Or so he thought.

The producers apparently agreed to take away Sherawat's item number from all prints in Delhi and Mumbai.

Says a source just about Priyadarshan, "Priyan was very sure he wanted the song removed at any cost. However the producers pleaded that the prints had already gone overseas and to the non-metropolitan centres. Priyan and Ratan Jain finally came to a compromise. The producer agreed to edit Mallika's number out of all prints within the metropolitan cities. However, finally Jain said he could only keep his word in Mumbai and Delhi."

Said a detailed friend of the director, "Priyan was requested to let the song be in non-metropolitan centers. He said the audiences will love Mallika's gyrations in Bihar, UP and likeminded centers. Though Priyan disagreed with the logistics dividing audiences in metropolitan and non-metropolitan groups, he relented because Ratan Jain spent 1 crores 35 lakh rupees at the song. However, expensive it can be the song needed to exit of Delhi and Mumbai."

Or so Priyadarshan believed until Thursday afternoon, hours before the film's release.

When this writer contacted Ratan Jain, he said, "No the song is included everywhere (including Delhi and Mumbai)."

When one touched base with Priyan again, he was livid, "What am i able to say? I GET to grasp they don't seem to be removing the song only now. I DO NOT need to say anything negative when the film is hours clear of release."

Big B speaks concerning the Bofors scam

His name though legendary within the annals of Indian cinema was dragged into the Bofors scam that happened almost 25 years back during his tryst as a political candidate. However, Amitabh Bachchan has since been vindicated from all of the fracas following a clean chit from former Swedish police Chief Sten Lindstrom.

Commenting on his exoneration, Bachchan stated on his blog, "I speak from personal experience and private exoneration. 25 years after the incident, I read today from one who pioneered accusation and investigation, of innocence. Of the fault that never lay before me. Of 1 that remained and shall perhaps remain a darkened spot, blemished beyond all recognition, but in admittance of wrong doing against me". Adding later, "NO PERSON will be in a position to understand and even remotely fathom, the hours and days and months and years of the anguish of petulant blame that I needed to undergo... They won momentarily. But lost ultimately. Lost position and strength and gear yes, but importantly their conscience. And today that counts essentially the most"!

With regards to how he and his family were suffering from all of the scenario that developed Bachchan says, "My family and that i are happy to notice the statement made by Former Swedish Police Head investigating the Bofors - India Gun deal. Mr. Lindstorm has stated that we were innocent and that there has been never ever any evidence to suggest our involvement. The interview indicates that it took Mr. Lindstorm 25 future years out with the reality. For us as a family that has borne the humiliation and insults for the past 25 years, this comes as a vindication of our stand. What was most annoying for me was the pain of insinuation that my ageing parents needed to bear during their lifetime. What has also been most alarming have been the statement given by the Police Head that my name was "planted" deliberately when he had indeed, already through his investigation, not found us guilty. When the accusations were made my family and that i moved the London courts and proved our innocence. We won our case and were delighted that the reality had eventually been justified. But, for the previous Police Head to haven't stated then what he always knew, is most surprising. The abuse, humiliation and the castigation that our family bore for 25 years has now been vindicated, finally."

The Bofors scandal that had rocked the Indian political scene, involved bribing and illegal payoffs within the late 1980s with accusations made against the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in addition to Bachchan, who was then a Congress MP, for alleged involvement within the illegal deals.

“Vicky Donor” is a light-hearted tackle the taboo attached to infertility, sperm donation and synthetic insemination.

Co-produced by Eros International and JA Entertainment, the film was released Friday over 600 screens worldwide. “The success of “Vicky Donor” is the triumph of its story. The script of the film is the true hero. Every character, be it Ayushmann or Kamlesh Gill or Yami, has fitted so beautifully within the film. I give full marks to the script. With a taboo topic, new actors, a small budget, the type of business the film has done is commendable,” Adarsh told IANS.

“Films starring newcomers or lesser known actors don’t discover a theatrical outlet within the international arena. The success of ‘Vicky Donor’ must also encourage distributors to head beyond the bounds of India and explore newer horizons,” he added. – IANS
