Akshay Kumar talks business, says make your personal films

akshay kumar 01 200x237 Bollywood star Akshay Kumar could also be seen just as an entertainer, but he has got his finger at the pulse of movie business. He says the sure-shot success mantra is to either make your individual film or opt for profit sharing.

“I have an easy solution – make your films, because whilst you make your film you won't include your remuneration and it takes to the air the load from a film,” Akshay told IANS in an interview.

“So, while you make a movie for Rs.20 crore and release it, the profits – be it Rs.5 crore or Rs.10 crore or Rs.40 crore – is yours. It’s all of your luck. Also, your film won’t flop because your remuneration is zero,” added the actor, who makes film under his two banners, Hari Om Productions and Grazing Goat.

For writers who rue that they don't get their dues, he suggested: “I am making three-four films and that i pay my writers well. Again they are able to also opt for profit sharing. If the film works well, they are able to ask for his or her cut within the profit.”

According to a contemporary report, the remuneration of Bollywood’s A-listers starts from Rs.10 crore and goes as much as Rs.40 crore.

Why are actors soliciting for such astronomical sums?

“It’s neither the producers’ fault nor actors’ because producers have no idea how much to present and actors have no idea how much to invite for.

“It’s tough to make a decision remuneration because sometimes a movie works and often it doesn't. So I'VE come to a conclusion: make your individual films,” said Akshay, who feels “the biggest burden on a movie is its artist.”

“If you remove that burden, it's impossible for a film to flop. It’s simple economics,” added the star, who have been active in filmdom for greater than 20 years and has about 100 films to his credit.

This doesn't mean that the 44-year-old won't work in outside films. He will, but on one condition.

“I would work in other producers’ films, but I CAN charge consistent with the film’s box office business. Profit sharing, in brief. That is the one way,” he added.

Marketing has become an essential component of a film, says Akshay. It helps within the first three days of the collection, but after that, it's all about content. So one must do something about the script and screenplay as well, he said.

“Marketing is a huge thing. Marketing works for the primary three days and content works after those three days. So it is important to to have the correct content as well,” he said.

Explaining the significance of script, he added: “I think script and screenplay are more important than actors in a movie. In case your script and screenplay are in place, it's big support for the actors.

“For instance, a movie with numerous action doesn’t work. But when you simply slap in keeping with the screenplay and whether it is positioned rightly, it really works wonders for a movie. In case you have seen ‘Deewaar’, it's imagined to be probably the greatest action movies. But actually it had a small action scene but that came on the right time and worked,” he said.

Akshay, who started his career with action movies like “Khiladi” and “Mohra”, now returns to the genre after seven years with “Rowdy Rathore”.

“I personally believe that individuals enjoy raw action greater than technology. In case you use an excessive amount of of technology, it's going to get better. Individuals are highly intelligent and understand what's real and what's unreal.

“If you sit in single theatres and watch such films with the audience, you are going to hear people saying, ‘Arre ye toh computer pe kiya hai (THAT IS done on computer)’. So that you can’t take your audiences for granted.

“So after I did my first action film ‘Rowdy Rathore’ after six years, I chose to do raw action. I FEEL in manpower and never technological power,” he said. – IANS
